French marinas to receive government support
France’s Ministry of Ecology will this year support nine marina projects to create a further 4,000 berths
Nine French marinas have been chosen this year to benefit from the support of the French government so far worth €1.7m to create 4,000 marina spaces.
The nine marina projects were chosen from the Ports de Plaisance Exemplaires (Exemplary Marinas) project, which is organised in conjunction with French marine associations Fédération des Industries Nautiques (FIN) and Voies Navigables de France (VNF).
Launched in 2009 and now in its third year, the Ports de Plaisance Exemplaires project selects marinas from a list of submissions to receive government support with the goal of the creation of new marina spaces alongside the sustainable development of land.
In 2011, a total of 25 submissions were made. Nine projects were chosen as ‘exemplary’, representing marinas both on the coast and on inland waters from across France. The French government has so far spent €1.7m on studies in support of the project.
Through the winners of the 2009 and 2010 editions of the project, a total of 9,000 berths will be created. The 2011 edition brings the total new berths planned under the project to 13,000.
France currently has 466 marinas and a capacity of more than 170,000 berths in maritime waters, but with five million boaters there is a shortage of boat spaces in the country.
