Denmark joins UK in call for deeper European emissions cut
Denmark yesterday published its ‘Energy Strategy 2050’, which aims to see the country free of coal, oil and natural gas by 2050.
In the interim, the strategy would significantly increase renewables to more than double wind capacity – including a 600 MW offshore wind farm at Kriegers Flak – to reach 42% of the country’s total energy production capacity and strengthen energy efficiency measures to cut energy use by 6% compared with 2006 levels by 2020.
Other highlights of the strategy include:
•Replace coal and natural gas with biomass;
•10% biofuel added to transport fuel by 2020;
•Identifying sites for 400 MW of small offshore wind turbines;
•Only smart electricity meters to be installed after 2013;
•Raise energy savings targets to 50% in 2013 and 75% in 2017-2020 for energy companies to implement among their customers; and
•Phase out oil and gas furnaces.
“No one is saying that carrying out major investments in energy efficiency and expanding our use of renewable energy is going to be free. But the alternative: continued dependence on fossil fuels will, as all signs indicate, only become more expensive in the years to come,” says Danish Minister for Climate and Energy Lykke Friis.
The strategy will require the country to cut its consumption of fossil fuels four times faster over the next 40 years than it has managed in the previous period, but Friis says it can be done without overburdening state finances or impacting competitiveness.
“If we are smart, converting to renewable energy will also give us new opportunities to increase our exports of green energy technology at a time when the global market for such products is growing,” she adds.
But in a joint statement with the UK’s Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne, Friis says that her country’s bid to increase energy efficiency and renewables is not enough.
Denmark – like the UK – cannot act alone, says Friis, and Europe must decarbonise further and faster to keep ahead of the low-carbon race.
The European Commission’s forthcoming 2050 energy roadmap must provide a “cost-effective, credible and ambitious” path forward, say Huhne and Friis in the statement.
Europe must move beyond the “cul-de-sac” of the current 20% emissions reduction target.
But while the UK, France, Germany and now Denmark favour a more demanding emissions reduction target, the EU has put off a decision following resistance from a number of eastern European nations.
