Team AkzoNobel has set a new outright 24-hour distance record for the Volvo Ocean 65 class.

Sailing in stormy conditions at speeds touching 30 knots (55 kilometers per hour) on the fifth day of Leg 9 of the Volvo Ocean Race across the Atlantic from Newport to Cardiff, the team AkzoNobel sailors clocked up a new benchmark distance of 567.03 nm (1,050 km) in a 24-hour period.

The team’s record setting performance has also carried them into the overall leg lead having overtaken Team Brunel (NED) with fewer than 1,500 nautical miles (2,778 km) left to race to Cardiff.

“We have just been ripping,” said helmsman and sail trimmer Justin Ferris (NZL). “We’ve knocked out a nice little record here. How long it holds, who knows? A nice feeling. Cheers to that!”

That might not be the end of the story: both team AkzoNobel and Team Brunel are charging at full pace and while the AkzoNobel crew currently has the upper hand we will need to wait a few hours more to see which team holds emerges with the 24-hour distance record when the conditions begin to moderate.

“We are not going to stop there - we are going to keep on pushing, keep on breaking this record,” said bowman Brad Farrand (NZL) “It’s around 560. We are going for 600!”
