How to teach your child to be eco-friendly

Children live and learn by example, which is something that they are taught by their parents, grandparents, older brothers and sisters, from a very early age. Setting the right example earlier on in their growth and development, will allow them to carry those same models and beliefs forward into their adult life.

To help you start the nurturing process, here are some things you can start to teach them so that they become more eco-friendly inside and outside of the home.

Recycling and reusing items you are throwing away

We have enough different coloured bins supplied to us by our local council that allow us to separate our rubbish so that it is decomposed of in the correct way. Get your children to put on some hardware gloves and show them how the bin system works in your home. Explain, as you are throwing things into each bin, why they go in there and what happens to them when the bin men come to take them away. This simple, but vitally important education, will allow them to differentiate what is waste and what is recyclable and more importantly, what impact it has on the environment if they don’t recycle properly.

It may also be the case that some of the items that you are throwing away can be reused in and around the home. For example, if your children are into arts and crafts, you could use empty bottles, cardboard etc to make different craft items.

Gardening and growing fruit and vegetables

Most children love playing outside so why not get them learning while they are outside too by teaching them about the different plants and animals in the garden. You can show them how best to look after a garden and what things need to be done to keep it looking in good shape.

Better still, if you have the space or time, it would be a great idea for you to show your children how to grow their own fruit and vegetables in their very own garden patch. Get them to do the work of planting the seed/bulb and get them to look after it until it is fully grown. This learning process allows them to not only learn responsibility, but how food is grown and how waste isn’t something we should adhere to, as food can take a long time to grow before it enters our stores.

There are plenty small gardening kits that you can purchase that have protective gloves and safe gardening tools for children to help them look after their patch safely.

Open their eyes to wildlife

As we know, there are many endangered species in the world that are at threat of becoming extinct. It is important that you make your children aware of these species so that they can fully understand the value of life better. Speak to them about animals that are now extinct and explain how they can help and support in keeping the animal world alive and thriving and why it is important to do so.

They may wish to give money to charity now and again or help raise money for charities that support these endangered species.

Reusing their toys and clothes

The youngest sibling usually ends up with the hand-me-downs in clothes and toys, yet most of the time, at the end of a toy’s or clothes life, they are thrown or stored away, never to be seen again.

What a waste! If you don’t take them to the charity show, why not teach your children the value of sharing and reusing their toys and clothes by arranging a child toy/clothes swap amongst their friends and their friend’s parents. The children get to swap toys that they don’t enjoy playing with any more, plus, it means that you are able to swap clothes with other parents that you are sick to death of seeing your child wear. This allows your kids to learn the value of sharing and not wasting toys or clothes that they have been given.

Being eco-friendly is important in today’s world, so teaching them early gives our world much better hope for the future.
